History

Atsubetsu Station opened on 1 August 1894 as a general station when the private Hokkaido Colliery Railway built a new station between Sapporo and Nopporo. The company's lines were nationalised on 1 October 1906 and the station passed to the state railways. A footbridge was added on 20 November 1967. Freight handling ended on 1 August 1973, the building was rebuilt on 30 March 1978, and parcels ended on 14 March 1985. JR Hokkaido inherited the station at the 1987 privatisation. A west concourse opened on 1 September 1990 along with a new down siding (track 4). Automatic ticket gates entered service at the south concourse on 7 December 1998 and at the west concourse on 25 December 1998; Kitaca IC cards were accepted from 25 October 2008, and lifts were installed in the station on 27 February 2010. The pedestrian deck linking north and south was rebuilt in May 2018.

Notes

At the Sapporo end of the station yard, a single-track freight line, the Atsubetsu Connecting Line, branches off toward the Sapporo Freight Terminal.
