History

Aso Station opened on 25 January 1918 as Bōchū Station, with the extension of the Railway Board's Miyaji Light Railway Line between Tateno and Miyaji. It became a station on a main line when that line was renamed the Hōhi Main Line on 2 December 1928, and on 17 November 1931 the imperial train carrying Emperor Shōwa, returning from the Army Special Grand Maneuvers, ran between this station and Higo-Ōzu. It was renamed to its present name, Aso Station, on 20 March 1961; freight handling ended on 1 October 1962, and the station became unstaffed on 1 November 1986. Kyushu Railway Company took over the station at the division and privatization of Japanese National Railways on 1 April 1987, and on 1 October 2023 it changed from a station operated under contract by JR Kyushu Service Support to one directly managed by the company.

Notes

All trains, including the Seven Stars in Kyushu, stop at the station, and the station restaurant "Kasei," which serves breakfast to passengers, opened on platform 2 to coincide with the start of that service.
