History

The Hanshin Main Line reached Ashiya when it opened on 12 April 1905. Hanshin Electric Railway operates the station, which has two opposed ground-level side platforms, part of them crossing the Ashiya River on a bridge, with underground ticket gates on the station's east and west sides. On 17 January 1995 the Great Hanshin earthquake damaged the line and closed the station; service through the section including Ashiya resumed on 26 January, and the whole line was working again on 26 June 1995. Ashiya later received the station number HS-20. It still serves Hanshin Main Line trains today, though since a December 2022 revision the rapid limited express stops there only on weekday mornings.

Notes

The upscale riverside district by the station includes the former Yamamura House, a Frank Lloyd Wright-designed residence that is a national Important Cultural Property.
