History
Ashidachi Station opened as a terminus on 1 December 1926, when the Railway Ministry's Hakubi North Line (now the Hakubi Line) was extended to this station from Kami-Iwami. It became an intermediate station when the line was extended to Bicchū-Kawamo on 25 October 1928 and the Hakubi Line was formed. Until around 1972 a siding ran to the nearby Ashidachi Sekkai Kōgyō lime company, and the station served as the departure point for limestone-hauling trains pulled by triple-headed D51-class steam locomotives. Parcel handling ended in February 1984, and freight handling ended in November 1986, leaving the station unstaffed. It became a JR West station at the division and privatization of JNR on 1 April 1987, and remains today, in Shingō-Yuno, Niimi, Okayama Prefecture, a station with an island platform serving two tracks where trains can pass each other.
Notes
The station name, written 足立, is read not with the usual reading "Adachi" but as "Ashidachi," and the station is also known as the birthplace of D51 triple-heading.
