History
Asashiobashi Station opened on 11 December 1961, when the Osaka Municipal Subway Line 4 (now the Chūō Line) opened between Osakakō and Bentenchō. It became a station of the Osaka Metropolitan Rapid Transport Authority (Osaka Metro) with the privatisation of the Osaka Municipal Transportation Bureau on 1 April 2018. Platform screen doors began operating on 29 June 2024. It is an elevated station with two opposed platforms serving two tracks; there is one ticket gate each at the east and west sides, and the platforms are on the third floor. The station's name derives from the Asashio Bridge that once spanned the Ajikawa canal, and from an Osaka city tram stop of the same name. It also serves as the gateway to the neighbouring Osaka Pool and Osaka City Central Gymnasium.
Notes
South of the station stood the "Minato Inspection Yard," a rail yard from the station's early years; it was later repurposed as a paint shop and then as a Transportation Bureau training facility, and traces of the former siding remain on the elevated bridge.
