History

Asano Station opened on 10 March 1926 as a freight stop on the Tsurumi Rinko Railway's Hamakawasaki-Bentenbashi section; passenger service began on 28 October 1930. The company was nationalized on 1 July 1943 and became part of the Tsurumi Line network; the branch junction to Tsurumi-Kawaguchi moved from Bentenbashi. That branch was discontinued in 1982 and formally abolished in 1986, the year the station's freight handling also ended. No staff have worked the station since 1 March 1971, and it passed to JR East when JNR was privatized on 1 April 1987. It sits where the Umi-Shibaura Branch Line splits from the Tsurumi Main Line, with an island platform on the main line and two side platforms on the branch.

Notes

The station is named after Asano Soichiro, the industrialist who founded both the Tsurumi Rinko Railway and the Asano zaibatsu conglomerate.
