History
Asahikawa Station opened in 1898 and is the terminus of the Hakodate, Sōya, Sekihoku and Furano lines. With the privatisation of Japanese National Railways on 1 April 1987 the station passed to JR Hokkaido. The first phase of a new elevated station building, designed by Hiroshi Naito, opened on 10 October 2010, and the entire station complex was completed in autumn 2011. The elevated station has four platforms serving seven tracks, all on the upper level above the concourse, and is the central station for Asahikawa, Hokkaido's second-largest city by population.
