History
Arashiyama Station opened on 25 March 1910 as a stop on the Arashiyama Electric Tramway, becoming the western terminus of what is now the Keifuku Arashiyama (Randen) Line from Shijo-Omiya. From 1929 to 1944 it also served as the starting point of the now-abandoned Atagosan Railway, serving pilgrims bound for Atago Shrine; Keifuku Electric Railroad took over the Arashiyama Line in 1942. The station has three dead-end platforms and three tracks at ground level. A 2002 renovation converted its former women-only hotel into the Hannari Hokkori Square arcade, and a 2013 rebuild removed the ticket gates and extended the platform roof. Since 2013 the platform has been lined with about 600 LED-lit, yuzen-patterned acrylic poles known as the Kimono Forest.
Notes
The station's foot bath, fed by Arashiyama hot-spring water, forms a "three sisters" tie-up with the foot baths at Yufuin Station in Kyushu and Hankyu's Minoo Station.
