History

Amaji Station was established on 26 July 1894 with the opening of the Bantan Railway between Himeji and Teramae, and it handled both passengers and freight from the outset. Operations were transferred to the Sanyō Railway on 1 June 1903, and it became a state-railway station when the Sanyō Railway was nationalized on 1 December 1906; the line-naming order of 12 October 1909 placed it on the Bantan Line. The station building was rebuilt in 1929. Freight handling ended on 1 April 1973 and parcel handling on 1 February 1984. It became a JR West station at the division and privatization of JNR on 1 April 1987. ICOCA became usable from 26 March 2016, and on 1 June 2022 the managing station changed from Fukusaki to Toyooka. It is a ground-level station with two opposed platforms serving two tracks where trains can pass each other, and its wooden station building survives.

Notes

A monument honoring Naitō Rihachi, who was involved with the Bantan Railway, stands in the park in front of the station.
