History

Akogi Station opened on 31 December 1893 when the Sangū Railway began passenger service between Tsu Station and Miyagawa Station in present-day Tsu, Mie Prefecture. The railway was nationalised on 1 October 1907 and the station passed to the Imperial Railway Agency; when line names were fixed in October 1909 it was assigned to the Sangū Line, and the section through the station was reorganised into the Kisei Main Line on 15 July 1959. Freight handling ended in August 1980 and the station was destaffed on 21 December 1983. Operation passed to JR Central on 1 April 1987. The old station building, a reminder of the days when Akogi was a relatively busy freight station serving a nearby spinning mill, was demolished on 30 September 2014, and a new building was completed on 2 March 2015.

Notes

The station takes its name from Akogi-ura, a stretch of coast about 1.2 kilometres to the east, which is also said to be the origin of the Japanese word akogi, meaning "greedy".
