History

Akigawa Station opened on 21 April 1925 on the Itsukaichi Railway as Nishi-Akiru Station (西秋留駅), the western counterpart of Higashi-Akiru on the same line. The Itsukaichi Railway was folded into the Nanbu Railway in 1940 and nationalised on 1 April 1944 as a wartime acquisition. Freight handling ceased on 15 April 1961, and on 31 March 1987 the station was renamed Akigawa to match its host city, Akigawa City. JR East took over the following day at the 1 April 1987 privatisation. Suica acceptance began on 18 November 2001, and a barrier-free programme added lifts outside the ticket gates at the north and south ends of the free passageway, the northern one entering service on 1 April 2020 and the southern one scheduled to follow that July.

Notes

The station opened as Nishi-Akiru, paired in name with Higashi-Akiru, its neighbour one stop toward Haijima; because it was the representative station of Akigawa City, it was renamed Akigawa in 1987 to match the city's name. The city later merged to become Akiruno, but the station kept the Akigawa name and remains that city's representative station.
