Location

History

Akasako tram stop opened on 8 May 1960 as the new northern terminus of the Nagasaki Electric Tramway when the line was extended north from Sumiyoshi; before the tramway came the road here was unpaved with a stream running along its edge, and the stream was filled in as the road was rebuilt for the tracks. Numbered 11, the stop is the start/end point of the operator's routes 1, 2 and 3 and is the company's northernmost stop. A proposal in 1973 to extend the line further north to the Nameshi district was never realised, and the city has now in effect abandoned the northern-extension plan, the cost of widening the road being among the reasons. A platform extension was completed on 28 March 2015; at 53 m the platform is the longest in the Nagasaki tramway network and can hold three cars nose-to-tail. The Akasako dispatch office, just steps from the platform, controls the switch and signal here.

Notes

Akasako is the westernmost tram stop in all of Japan.
