Location

History

Akagi Station opened on 10 November 1928 as Shin-Ōmama Station on the Jōmō Line of the Jōmō Electric Railway, in what was then the town of Ōmama, Yamada District, Gunma Prefecture (part of the city of Midori since 2006). Tōbu Railway followed with its own station on the Kiryū Line on 18 March 1932. Both stations were renamed Akagi on 1 November 1958, in connection with the opening the previous year of the Akagi Tozan Railway up Mount Akagi (that line was abandoned in 1968). Freight handling was abolished on 1 October 1996, the last freight working having run on 25 September. After service in the old station building ended on 24 July 2002, a new shared station building opened on 16 January 2003. From 17 March 2012, Akagi was designated TI-57 in the Tōbu numbering system.

Notes

Although the station is named after Mount Akagi, no route bus from the station reaches the mountain today. The name was given because the station served as the bus gateway to Mount Akagi; those services now run from Maebashi Station and Chūō-Maebashi Station instead.
