Location
History
Aka Station opened on 15 March 2003 on the Heisei Chikuhō Railway Tagawa Line in the village of Aka, Fukuoka Prefecture. It stands where the line meets the never-completed JNR Yusubaru Line, whose construction was halted amid falling coal production and weak ridership forecasts. The station building doubles as the Aka Village Chamber of Commerce and Industry office, and the platform serves a single bi-directional track with no permanent staff. On the ground prepared for the unbuilt line in front of the station, volunteers run a small tourist trolley over a short segment of track about once a month outside the winter season; that operation resumed in March 2023 after a COVID-19 pause.
Notes
Aka Station is written with the single kanji 赤, meaning "red", and stands in the village of Aka: the village hall, central community centre and health centre are clustered in front of it, although the village's main built-up area lies closer to neighbouring Yusubaru Station.
