Location

History

Aizu-Shimogō Station opened on 27 December 1934 as Narahara Station on the Japanese Government Railways Aizu Line. The name derived from Narahara, the village in which it was then located. Freight handling ended in 1971 and parcel handling in 1984; the station passed to East Japan Railway Company (JR East) at the division and privatization of JNR in April 1987, and was renamed Aizu-Shimogō Station on 16 July of the same year when the line was converted to the Aizu Railway. It is a ground-level station with an island platform serving two tracks plus a siding, with a wooden station building. It is a simplified-contract station entrusted to the Shimogō Town Tourism Corporation, and it is closed on holidays. The station-name sign reads "Linking the heart and nature of Aizu."

Notes

Under Japanese National Railways the station's earlier name was Narahara Station, taken from the village where it stood; it was renamed to its present name on the same day the line converted to the Aizu Railway.
