History

Agawa Station opened as a terminus on 9 September 1928, when the Railway Ministry's Kogushi Line (now the San'in Main Line) was extended between Takibe Station and this station. In 1930 the Mine Line (as it then was) was extended from Nagato-Furuichi Station to this station, making it a boundary station, and in 1933 it became an intermediate station on the San'in Main Line following its incorporation into that line. Freight handling ended in 1963 and baggage handling in 1984; the station became unstaffed on 1 April 1986, and it became a JR West station at the division and privatization of Japanese National Railways on 1 April 1987. The simplified-contract arrangement was also ended in 2012, making the station unstaffed all day. The old, deteriorated station building was demolished in 2019, and in August 2020 the café "Agawa" and a bicycle rental service opened on the station premises.

Notes

After the wooden station house was demolished in 2019, the redeveloped site reopened in August 2020 with a privately operated café called Agawa, founded by a Hagi guesthouse owner who negotiated a lease with JR West to preserve the rural-station atmosphere.
