Location
History
Abe Station opened as a new station on 5 February 1932 between Hayabusa and Hattō stations on the Japanese National Railways Wakasa Line, handling both passengers and freight from the start. Its location was Ōaza Kusakabe, Abe Village, Yazu District, Tottori Prefecture. The Wakasa Line itself had opened on 1 December 1930, but the siting of the station became contentious, with the Kusakabe district and the Yasuijuku district on the opposite bank of the Hattō River in dispute; under a compromise that gave the station building two entrances, it was built on the Kusakabe side, and so it opened one year and two months after the main line. In 1962 the station was placed under contracted operation and freight handling was discontinued; parcel handling ended in 1971, and the station became unstaffed. It passed to JR West with the division and privatization of Japanese National Railways on 1 April 1987, and became a station of the Wakasa Railway when the Wakasa Line was converted to third-sector operation on 14 October the same year. On 23 July 2008 the station building and platform, both built in 1932, were registered as national Registered Tangible Cultural Properties.
Notes
The station building is combined with a barbershop, ticket sales are simply contracted out to that shop, and the barbershop's owner also serves as stationmaster.
